20 gauge
20-gauge shotgun is a firearm that is smaller and lighter compared to the more commonly used 12-gauge. The 20-gauge refers to the bore diameter, approximately 0.615 inches (15.6 mm). The gauge system works similarly to the 12 gauge, where the number refers to how many lead balls of that size would make up one pound—in this case, 20 lead balls would equal a pound.
Due to its lighter weight and reduced recoil, the 20-gauge is often preferred by beginners, smaller-framed individuals, and hunters who need a more maneuverable firearm. It’s commonly used for bird hunting, small game, and sport shooting like skeet and trap. Despite its smaller size, it can still pack a punch and is effective for many of the same purposes as a 12-, gauge but with less shoulder fatigue and a smoother shooting experience.
